The method of reproducing images on fabric and scripture on paper is
printing. China has been identified as one of the foremost centers for
origin of printing. The earlier printers of the Han dynasty in China
printed attractive images on silk fabric in order to please the
Empresses of the Kingdom. Some of the early examples of China printing
can be seen in the form of silk fabric which dated back as early as
fourth century AD.
One of the earliest known methods of printing in China involved the use
of wooden monolithic blocks which had mirror image of the picture or
scripture imprinted on them, expert carpenters of the time paid
attention to detail and made sure that the wooden blocks where carved
with very high accuracy. The wooden monoliths were mostly used for
printing of images on the silk fabrics which were considered the
hallmark of printing China at that time. The Han dynasty made profitable
trade relationships across East Asia and traded these garments. The
dyes which were used to achieve the array of colors were extracted from
natural sources like dried flowers and leaves. In today¡¯s China the
textile printing industry has evolved and they use dyes extracted from
chemical organic compound to produce the array of color in the garments.
Another form of printing which evolved in China during 10th century was
metallographic printing, this in turn directly lead to Coinage i.e. the
use of metallic coins in trading. The Han Dynasty had its silversmiths
and goldsmiths print out silver and gold coin with symbols of the royal
empire printed on them. These coins according to their size and material
had different value and were use all across China for trading. This is
some the earliest known examples of coinage in the world.
China is also considered as the place where the printing of the first
ever book Diamond S¨±tra happened much before the Holy Bible was printed
in Europe. The printing presses of China at that time could print as
high as 2,000 double sided copies in a day. The Paper Printing industry
in China has also kept pace with modern development and all modern
printing methods can be seen practiced in today¡¯s China.
In the ancient world China was known for its technology and innovations
and printing, China¡¯s greatest contribution to the modern world has
enabled us to save forever the works of talent authors, painters and
craftsmen by the use of printed copies.
